The remains of the church of St Connel, a mid-7th century saint. The church appears to have been abandoned around 1681 and was replaced by a new parish church in the village of Kirkconnel in 1729. The area to be scheduled is irregular on plan, to include the remains described and an area around within which evidence relating to their construction and use may survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map. The discovery of such stones on a site with early ecclesiastical building remains, indicates this site may have been important in the spread of Christianity in the southwest of Scotland.
