The path from the car park crosses the footbridge over River Loanan at the north of Loch Awe. Canisp is therefore a must if you plan on doing a lot of hiking on the NC500. It is also possible to walk to Canisp via Glencansip lodge from Lochinver. The most popular ascent of Canisp starts at the north end of Loch Awe (NC249160) where there is car parking and a footbridge to cross the River Loanan as it leaves the loch. *This type of rock is common throughout Assynt and is some of the world’s oldest rock. Another ascent from the east which also uses the SE ridge starts at Stronchrubie where there is also a footbridge over the Loanan. Lochinver is an attractive village with shops, pubs/hotels and restaurants. Canisp is a rocky hill elongated SE to NW. The number of opportunities for Lochinver walks are simply massive and, even going at my typically breakneck pace of travel, repeat visits are simply essential. The two peaks make a fantastic backdrop for this fine view of Lochinver. This is a long walk in but appears to be a plausible day trip - most would prefer an ascent of Suilven from this direction. There is a hardware shop, and small shop selling outdoor equipment also found in Lochinver. Lovely composition and excellent notes. Of the two, Suilven is certainly the more iconic, frequently climbed & photographed. The cairn is therefore welcome shelter for a much earned rest and a sandwich or two.
